Message from the SNO President

Dear Colleagues:
Thank you for participating and making our most recent annual meeting (Orlando, November 16-19, 2006) a great success. The science was excellent (thanks to Fred Lang and Al Yung for organizing), and the banquet was highlighted by the moving testimonials of Michelle Higa and Susan Sontag, who helped us remember our collective goals.
Several new SNO initiatives have commenced, though only a few can be highlighted in this brief report. First was the smooth transition of the Neuro-Oncology editorial office to Houston. We owe much to Darell Bigner and his team at Duke University Press in laying the strong foundation of our society's journal and look forward to continued growth under the stewardship of Al Yung and David James. Second, the SNO committee structure has been revamped to increase participation from the membership and provide continuity. SNO welcomes the neuro-oncology nursing community to its membership and Noreen Leahy as the representative of the new Nursing Committee on the SNO board. The International Committee has garnered a lot of interest. We look forward to the leadership of Waldemar Debinski and Jonathan Finlay plus the many volunteers who met in Orlando. This committee's work will be essential in furthering the society's mission to regions that are not currently served by SNO or its sister organizations. Last, I would like to highlight additional partnerships that our society has been developing to further our mission in neuro-oncology. We look forward to closer ties with our sister organizations (EANO and JSNO), working with ISPNO to enhance the very important pediatric neuro-oncology mandate of SNO, a planned joint meeting with the AANS/CNS Tumor Section in 2009, and SNO's administrative organization of the Neuro-Tumor Club at AACR.
Many of you have expressed a common wish that even as our society grows, we should endeavor to make it one that remains personable and not too administratively heavy. In Jan Esenwein, Chas Haynes, and Linda Greer, we have a dedicated, personable, and efficient administrative team, which bodes well for the future of our society. The team has already commenced to organize SNO's Twelfth Annual Meeting, November 15-18, 2007, in Dallas, which promises to be even more stimulating than Orlando. A society's vibrancy and growth is in its membership. Kindly stay involved.

SNO Issues Call for Abstracts

In preparation for the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuro-Oncology (see the calendar listing on the following page), Scientific Program Committee Vice-Chair Russ Pieper has announced a call for abstracts from those wishing to make a presentation at the meeting. This year, for the first time, abstracts will be considered only if submitted online through the SNO Web site (www.soc-neuro-onc.org). In addition, to reflect recent advances in research, the scope of the meeting sessions has been expanded (for instance, there is now an area specifically devoted to research involving stem cells, and the genomics topic area has been formally renamed to include proteomics research). Abstracts are due to the society no later than May 15, 2007. Acceptance notifications will be issued at the end of June. For more information, see the full announcement on pages 236 and 237 of this issue.

The Online Neuro-Oncology Center Directory

The SNO Web site (www.soc-neuro-onc.org) includes a Neuro-Oncology Center Directory—akin to a yellow pages of brain tumor centers. Each center is invited to submit its information to this directory to showcase its clinical and/or research enterprises. These listings are searchable by the public and by your colleagues and are intended to help geographical referrals and to build collaborations. Please click on the "Center Directory" link at the top of the page, and then go to "Add a Listing." Please feel free to address any comments or concerns to Oliver Bögler (webmaster{at}soc-neuro-onc.org).

Eighth Congress of the European Association
for Neuro-Oncology (EANO)

The Eighth Congress of the European Association for Neuro-Oncology will be held under the auspices of the Spanish Group of Neuro-Oncology (GENO). GENO was founded in 1999 in the multidisciplinary spirit of EANO. The local organizing committee is already working hard with EANO to provide the best postgraduate course, scheduled to be held on the first day of the congress, and an attractive scientific program that will cover the most important topics of our field in symposia, meet-the-expert sessions, and keynote lectures. As usual, the interdisciplinary spirit will be the basis of the congress. We invite colleagues from all the neuro-oncological disciplines (such as basic sciences, neuropathology, neurology, neurosurgery, neuroimaging, medical oncology, pediatrics, radiation oncology, and nursing) to participate actively in the oral and poster presentations.
